After arriving in Germany

After arriving in Germany

The application procedure after arrival

The national visa with which you entered Germany is only valid for a limited period. It is therefore necessary that you receive a residence permit in Germany before your national visa expires.

Applying for a residence permit

With every application for a residence permit, it must first be clarified for what purpose you want to enter Germany. The most common purposes of residence are work, study or family reunification. Depending on the purpose for which you want to enter the country, it will then be checked which requirements must be met. In addition, the purpose of the stay is also important for the duration of the stay and for the possibility of extending or changing the residence permit. If the purpose of your stay changes, you may have to apply for a new residence permit.

Appointment at the Immigration Office

For most residence permits, you have to prove that you can finance yourself.

There are various organizations that offer scholarships. In the future we will inform you about the requirements in detail here. Sign up for our newsletter to be notified when we update this page.

Granting of the residence permit

After the application has been submitted to the immigration authorities, the residence permit is usually issued within 6-8 weeks. After the application process is completed, an electronic residence card will be issued within 4 weeks. However, you have the right to reside in Germany immediately after submitting your application.
